The theory of Sustainable Development links models of long-term biologicaland economic maximization. It extends cost benefit analysis and bio-economic andcombines it with ideas of economic welfare. Economic tools are available for thepublic to evaluate alternative outcomes; for instance, increase in production asagainst various environmental scenario. For "sustainable development"solutions to be economically efficient greater use needs to be made of economicsin the setting of goals and theirattainment. Perhaps, even before this can occur politicians, lawyers andenvironmental scientists need to recognize the important role that can be playedby economics. Also, economists need to recognize that sustainable development inone form or other, is here to stay and devote more resources to its research.This book deals with these and related issues in detail.
