Twelve year old John finds himself at home alone while his parents are on vacation. They forgot their son at home and now John is on a mission to defend his family's home from the bad guys Dan and Stan who intend to rob the place. John overhears them talking about breaking in and robbing the place so he begins to set up booby traps and find ways to defend his home from being robbed and vandalized. John also does the grocery shopping for the week. He plans ahead to make sure that he has a meal for each day of the week and each meal. The cashier at the grocery store gives him a hard time asking him about his parents. She was suspicious that a twelve year old boy could be in the store getting groceries by himself. He was forced to grow up very fast that week as he was left home alone by mistake. Meanwhile John's parents are on an airplane to Orlando and they are freaking out because they had just realized they left their son at home alone by himself. They tried to get the airplane to turn around and go back to Chicago but the airline policy was that they not turn around for anyone. They needed to stay on their path so they could reach Orlando, Florida on time for all of the other passengers. John spends his afternoon booby trapping the house and preparing for the bad guys Dan and Stan to break into his home. John was nervous but he was good at this and he prepared so many traps for the bad guys to get into. Getting into John's home was not going to be an easy task for the bad guys but even if they did get inside the chances of them getting out with anything would be slim to one with as many booby traps as John set for them. After John is finished setting up the booby traps he decided to fix some mac and cheese for dinner. It was not the same way that his mom made it but he did not know how to do it like his mother had always done for him. So he read the directions on the box and began to cook the Mac and Cheese. John sat down to enjoy his meal for a few moments before it was time for the bad guys to come back. They were planning to come back at 10:00pm so he had about an hour to eat and get ready for the festivities that were about to begin. Would Dan and Stan break in the house and steal everything or would John be able to defend his home and keep his family's belongings safe and sound? Read this book to find out.
