This book has selected Sri Lanka as a case study. Thisenables one to take a particular problem and analyse it indepth, thereby providing a better understanding of the problematic. Sri Lanka's security concerns are not, in a conventionalsense, dictated by any given framework - on the contrary itevolves. Sri Lanka in order to establish its national identityencounters internal as well as external challenges which in turndefine the parameters of its security and development. Since thebook is both theoretical and empirical the analysis would be basedon both quantitative and qualitative data drawn from primary andsecondary sources. A substantial part of the data collected is fromsecondary sources from books, journals and newspaper. The method ofcontent analysis is also adopted to draw inferences from thesecondary sources. The book is a historical analytical study as it draws fromthe writings of the past and makes comparison with the presentcontext in an attempt to delineate trends and patterns of statebehaviour and policy. However, at the very outset the author wouldlike to point out to a limitation faced during the data collectionprocess. There would tend to be a gap in the data as much writingon Sri Lanka in the post Cold War era has not been forthcoming.Besides most of the literature available deals mainly with the LTTEand issues related to it. The Author attempts to make use of dataavailable in from news paper reporting and on the internet.
