This book presents a systematic analysis of the process of economic development and regional cooperation in ASEAN. It discusses the evolution of ASEAN, from its establishment as a regional organization designed to promote political stability in Southeast Asia to its increasing role in world trade, and in accelerating economic development through the expansion of intra-regional trade. The second edition additionally covered the causes and consequences of the Asian currency crisis and its impact on ASEAN countries. This third edition has been updated and expanded to include new material on the growing ASEAN-China trade, the war on terror since the tragedies of September 11th (US) and October 2002 (Bali, Indonesia), and the impact on the ASEAN countries. In addition, the impact of the recent war in Iraq and the ongoing problem of SARS are explored.
