Excerpt from A Century of Empire, Vol. 3 of 3: 1801 1900
IN preparing the third and last volume of this historical sketch I have not been regardless of the criticism passed upon its predecessors by the periodical press. For the general leniency of that criticism I cannot but feel grate ful; in so far as it has been unfavourable, I accept it as salutary. Adverse comment has been chiefly directed upon three points - first, the omission or inadequate treat ment of certain developments in the social condition of the people; second, the brevity with which the genesis and growth of the British colonies have been described; and third, the degree in which the author has allowed the narrative to be tinged with the predilection or prejudice of a Conservative in politics.
