The 3 Mistakes of My Life is the third novel by bestselling author Chetan Bhagat. The story revolves around 3 friends, the choices they make, and the actions that unfold as a consequence.
The plot is based in the city of Ahmedabad, in Gujarat, where the 3 friends have grown up and spent their entire lives. All of them hail from middle-class families, and have been firm friends from childhood. Govind is the main character in the book, and the story is told through his perspective. Thus, the ‘3 mistakes’ that the title of the book talks about are the three mistakes that Govind committed, and how these mistakes had a huge impact on his life as well as the lives of his friends.
His other two friends are Omi and Ishaan. Ishaan is talented at cricket and is extremely passionate about the game, besides being highly patriotic. Omi is portrayed as slightly dim-witted and coming from a strongly-rooted Hindu culture, and eventually gets involved in the religious politics of his family. However, despite their differences in nature, both of them are quite loyal to Govind, who is ambitious and aspires to be a businessman. He opens a cricket shop with the help of his friends, and is the brains behind the business, also handling the finance and accounting part because of his good skills in Maths. He gives tuitions in the subject as a source of extra income, and one of his students is Ishaan’s younger sister. The duo soon fall in love, and this is one of the three mistakes that he commits. With a plot filled with many twists and unexpected events, The 3 Mistakes of My Life is a peppy story targeted at a young audience.
The Bengali translation of the book was published by Diamond Books, and is available in paperback.
