Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak, when he declared, famously, "I am not a Hindu, nor am I am Muslim." Under succeeding Gurus, Sikhism became a religion of warriors.
Guru Hargobind fortified the holy city of Amritsar, against Mughal attempts to invade it. It was at this time, that Bidhi Chand, a reformed thief, tricked the entire Mughal garrison in Lahore and reclaimed the precious horses the Mughals had stolen from the guru.
With the waning of the Mughal Empire, Ranjit's Singh's rise to power was swift. With the help of his brilliant general, Hari Singh Nalwa, Ranjit Singh's empire stretched across Punjab, extending till the Khyber pass.
